Panoramica

Tokyo is a polycentric metropolis where skyscrapers, vast stations and shopping districts sit alongside temples, shrines and gardens. Its identity is defined by the contrast between contemporary efficiency and everyday rituals: orderly queues, quiet public transport, izakaya, markets and neighbourhood festivals. Shibuya and Shinjuku reveal its high-rise side, while Asakusa, Ueno and Meiji Jingu retain a historic and spiritual character.

The city suits travellers looking for urban culture, food, shopping, design, technology and museums, especially when days are planned by area to reduce travel time. It works equally well for a first visit and longer stays, thanks to dense rail networks and highly distinct neighbourhoods. It is less suited to those seeking a slow pace, instant orientation or a low-cost holiday without planning: distances, rush-hour crowds and unspoken rules require some attention. Spring and autumn offer the best climate balance, but advance booking is essential.

Itinerari consigliati

One day between historic Asakusa and the high-rise faces of Shibuya and Shinjuku. Visit Sensō-ji in the morning, then take in city views and illuminated districts in the late afternoon.

Come arrivare

  • Plane - Haneda is around 20–35 minutes from the centre by train; from Narita, allow around 50–90 minutes depending on the service and destination
  • Train - Shinkansen services connect Kyoto in around 2 hours 15 minutes and Osaka in around 2 hours 30 minutes, arriving at Tokyo or Shinagawa
  • Car - Yokohama is around 45–90 minutes away; tolls, traffic and parking make driving impractical in central Tokyo

Common mistake: assuming Narita is close to the centre without allowing at least one hour for the transfer.

Consigli pratici

  • Keep voices low on public transport and do not make phone calls in train carriages
  • Respect queues and wait at the marked boarding points on platforms
  • Do not tip: service is normally included
  • Carry an IC card for trains, the metro, buses and small purchases
  • Keep a small amount of cash for independent shops, temples and traditional venues
  • Avoid eating while walking, except in clearly designated areas
  • At shrines, purify yourself at the water fountain and avoid walking through the centre of the torii gate
  • Check the last-train time: many services end around midnight
  • Take small items of rubbish with you when public bins are unavailable
  • During matsuri, follow designated routes and do not obstruct processions or portable shrines
  • In summer, check heat, humidity and typhoon alerts
