Panoramica
Tokyo is a polycentric metropolis where skyscrapers, vast stations and shopping districts sit alongside temples, shrines and gardens. Its identity is defined by the contrast between contemporary efficiency and everyday rituals: orderly queues, quiet public transport, izakaya, markets and neighbourhood festivals. Shibuya and Shinjuku reveal its high-rise side, while Asakusa, Ueno and Meiji Jingu retain a historic and spiritual character.
The city suits travellers looking for urban culture, food, shopping, design, technology and museums, especially when days are planned by area to reduce travel time. It works equally well for a first visit and longer stays, thanks to dense rail networks and highly distinct neighbourhoods. It is less suited to those seeking a slow pace, instant orientation or a low-cost holiday without planning: distances, rush-hour crowds and unspoken rules require some attention. Spring and autumn offer the best climate balance, but advance booking is essential.

Come arrivare
- Plane - Haneda is around 20–35 minutes from the centre by train; from Narita, allow around 50–90 minutes depending on the service and destination
- Train - Shinkansen services connect Kyoto in around 2 hours 15 minutes and Osaka in around 2 hours 30 minutes, arriving at Tokyo or Shinagawa
- Car - Yokohama is around 45–90 minutes away; tolls, traffic and parking make driving impractical in central Tokyo
Common mistake: assuming Narita is close to the centre without allowing at least one hour for the transfer.
