Panoramica

Marrakech is the major urban gateway to southern Morocco, built around its ochre-hued medina, souks and Jemaa el-Fna Square. Its character comes from the contrast between artisan lanes, Saadian palaces, historic gardens and contemporary districts such as Gueliz. Haggling in the markets, hammams, mint tea and tanjia cuisine remain central traditions, while the square takes on a different character from morning to evening.

It is ideal for travellers seeking heritage, photography, artisan shopping and an intense city best explored on foot, balancing visits with breaks in riads or gardens. It does, however, require a good sense of direction, patience when bargaining and awareness of scooters and unsolicited offers. It is less suited to those who prefer constant quiet, orderly traffic or mild temperatures at the height of summer; outer districts and the Palmeraie offer a calmer pace.

Quando andare

Marrakech has a semi-arid climate, with very hot summers and mild midday temperatures in winter. Day-to-night temperature swings are pronounced.

Consigli pratici

  • Dress respectfully, especially in traditional neighbourhoods and near religious sites
  • Ask permission before photographing people, artisans or street performers
  • Agree a price before accepting photos, directions, services or rides without a meter
  • Bargain calmly in the souks; it is not necessary in fixed-price shops
  • Watch for scooters in narrow lanes, including areas that appear pedestrianised
  • Carry small-denomination cash: cards and digital payments are not accepted everywhere
  • Use offline maps, but confirm the final route through the medina with your accommodation
  • During Ramadan, some opening hours change and service may slow before sunset
  • Avoid activities involving wild animals kept in captivity
  • Do not follow unofficial guides without first agreeing the route, duration and price
